Rotorua's positive spirit

For the past couple of months I've had the pleasure being one of two artists-in-residence at Be Rude Not To Cafe, alongside artist Robbie Grangaard.

While working at our easels, it has been a great opportunity to chat to customers, locals and visitors alike, and share their stories and experiences.

The encouragement, compliments, and general optimism of the conversations we have had has left our hearts full to overflowing with warmth and aroha.

The spirit of love itself, Te Wairua Tapu, is alive and well in Rotorua. It feels like as a city we are ascending to a new level.

Speed limits 'nonsensical'

The new speed limits on Hamurana Rd are nonsensical.

Changing the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h on the stretch alongside the golf course is totally unnecessary.

This stretch is a wide, well-made road with great sight lines and until a year or two ago was 100km/h.

To my knowledge there have been no accidents and 99 per cent of the time it is quiet with little traffic.

It has been 60km/h for a couple of weeks and everyone is still travelling this stretch at about 80km/h, even after having huge neon signs advising the change.

I am sure this is evidence that I am not alone in thinking this road is perfectly safe at 80km/h.

The only way motorists will change their speed here is either a permanent speed camera or a traffic officer permanently parked there because the new limit is just ridiculous.

Please change it back ASAP.

Cyclists

I have read and re-read Clive Phillips letter (Rotorua Daily Post, September 20) about cyclists. I believe that he has the honour of being the first pedestrian ever to complain about cyclists cycling on the road. Congratulations!

Cycleways wasted on cyclists

I was astounded driving home in peak evening traffic south along Ranolf St to come across a biker pedalling among vehicles when there was a brand new, wide, shared path alongside.

The clown was weaving in and out of parked cars due to the narrowing of the street because of said shared path, causing motorists to stop or slow to a crawl while he weaved his way home. Presumably to loved ones.

What a waste of ratepayers' money building the Rotorua cycleways when there are a group of cyclists that will never get off the road.

Perhaps they should be ticketed for reckless "driving".
