Draft treaties in Latin
With regard to the recent discussions of the legality of the Waitangi Treaty: after much discussion with the members of the Historical Group, the proposition was put forward that perhaps all treaties, not just that of Waitangi, should be drafted in Latin; this may not be such a silly idea after all.
Many years ago the medical and the biological groups decided to name most items in Latin on the grounds that Latin was more easily identified in every country regardless of their native language. This makes a lot of sense.
Treaties should be read the same regardless of native language - the only way to ensure this is to use a language that never varies - and whatever the tongue of the user what is written will never change. It may well - if adopted - save a lot of heartache and dispute!
