Letters: Maori signs at library 'absurd', says letter writer

In response to a letter from Mr John Pakes, (Letters, Rotorua Daily Post March 31), regarding signs in the library, I would like to point out that whatever the Rotorua Lakes Council may decide in their wisdom or otherwise, English is still the number one language in New Zealand.

Accordingly, seeing signs in Maori at the top is strange to put it very politely.

Secondly, if there were any Maoris (sic) so uneducated that they do not speak English, I have no doubt that they would not be able to read either.

In other words, having signs in Maori as well as in English, in the library or anywhere else, is just absurd.

Say no to growth

If there is one word in modern parlance which I have come to loathe - it is "growth".

Growth to me spells difficulty. Difficulty in finding a parking space, difficulty is buying or renting a property at a sensible price, difficulty negotiating increasing traffic, difficulties showing themselves in ways previously unimagined in a world without that dreaded "growth".

It is hardly surprising that so many of us experience anxiety and depression. Growth to my mind causes stress for those of us who are not benefiting from the so called "trickle down" effect.
