Letters: Leave our tulips alone

Sometime last week you published a letter (Letters to the Editor, October 13) from a gent from out-of-town, he made disparaging remarks about our tulips.

Rotorua has some of the finest gardens, flower beds, and parks in the country. The way the tulips and other flowers look right now is a credit to the workers who tend these very attractive displays.

I honestly suggest this chap returns and I will personally guide him around our beautiful city - and even buy him a beer afterwards.

Democracy at work

Paul Carpenter (Letters to the Editor, October 15) pointed out that only one in five eligible voters elected Steve Chadwick as mayor.

However, only about one in eight voted for Reynold Macpherson, who tried hard to make the Te Arawa Partnership the major election issue, and who claimed that the council election would be a referendum on it.

Another strident anti-partnership campaigner, Mike McVicker, could not attract enough votes to be returned to council, despite being a sitting councillor.

It is clear that the vast majority of Rotorua people either support the partnership arrangement or are not bothered enough about it to get out and vote.

Reynold Macpherson and his supporters claim to be strong advocates of the democratic process. I trust that they now accept its outcomes.
