I wish to respond to your correspondent T McConkey (Letters, February 2), who believes journalists Tommy Wilson and Lizzie Marvelly's columns may be "better
placed on the Te Maori page of the Rotorua Daily Post".

I disagree. Tommy Wilson's recent article on homelessness in Tauranga
encompassed marginalised families - both European
and Maori. His columns cover diverse topics, and he is an entertaining writer.

By the same token, Lizzie Marvelly's columns embrace topics of widespread and diverse interest, certainly not confined to Maori issues. They include women's issues, and topics of
national and international interest.

She is a talented writer- in my view, a young woman ahead of her time.

Long may the Rotorua Daily Post continue to publish the columns of Tommy
Wilson and Lizzie Marvelly.

Lizzie prepared to speak up

I am writing in opposition to T. McConkey's letter (Letters, February 1) and in show of support for Lizzie Marvelly's column.

The proposition that any writing on issues of social justice belong purely on the Te Maori page has a hugely racist implication.

In addition, issues of social justice should always concern everybody.

Inequality in any respect creates a much less happy society overall.

Turn it around to the goal of equality for all and you have Denmark: one of the happiest countries in the world.

Equality is in the interest of everyone and this is something that Lizzie Marvelly is clearly happy to endorse.

She is refreshing in journalism. Rather than writing purely for the sake of a career, she actually cares, and is willing to speak up about issues that affect every one of us.
