The time has come, unfortunately, when we have to consider very carefully if selling fireworks to individuals is the right thing to do.

Sadly the majority of the youngsters who purchase fireworks appear to be completely irresponsible.

Many people have pets - dogs in particular are affected by the noise; they do not understand the concept of 'firework created' noise and thus are scared of it; it is neither fair to the animal or the neighbours who hear the poor things barking.

Controlled firework displays - as they are now in most civilised countries - are the only way forward; added to this needs to be a time to stop in the evenings - 11pm and later is just not acceptable and should constitute the same felony as any other noise at that time of night.

Re list of "essential items" to have on hand in case of an emergency (Rotorua Daily Post November 7.) It omitted medication. For someone who is dependent on regular medication it is essential that they have a "get away" kit of their pills and potions. This is far more important than storing food or toiletries. This should be in a sponge bag close to the door. In the scenario of a plane crashing on a residential area, there will be no time to run down the passage. Grab the bag and go!

Make sure your supply of medication is up to date at all times. In an emergency you will not get to a chemist to renew your prescription.

In the event of an individual emergency, when the ambulance arrives the first thing the paramedics ask is "What medication are you on?" As you move in and out of consciousness it is hard to remember. Have a card with your prescriptions on it to pass to them.
