League: Two local sides among unbeaten trio

Three teams have kept their undefeated record alive after round two of the Bay of Plenty Coastline premier competition.

Tokoroa's Pacific Sharks and the Otumoetai Eels have won both their games this season, while Pikiao have posted one win and a draw in their two starts.

For the second week in a row, Otumoetai were pushed to the wire and grabbed a close win over a good Ngongotaha side, finishing 12-10 at Mitchell Park in Tauranga.

Otumoetai have joined the premier grade after the Bay of Plenty and Coastline competitions combined this year.

Meanwhile, Pacific flexed their muscles in beating a strong Taupo Phoenix side 22-6 in Taupo on Saturday.

The Sharks are looking like early frontrunners to win the minor premiership this season and will go up against Pikiao this coming Saturday in a rematch of last year's grand final.

Reigning champs Pikiao got their first win of the season on Saturday, beating a valiant Mangakino Hawks side 36-22 at Rotorua's Puketawhero Park.

Pikiao coach Thomas Wharerau, who has taken over from Doug Unuwai this year, said Mangakino gave them a great hitout. He said his team was still developing, with plenty of new faces.

"The boys are getting their combinations going together and I thought Mango did really well. They had four or six big guys there that put up good defence and a good running style as well," he said. "They got within about six points of us in the second half."

Pikiao's man of the match was new fullback Ben Armstrong. "It was his first game for the club ... he is only a little guy and he done really well."

Wharerau said they were looking forward to a very tough away match this weekend against Pacific.
