The Bay of Plenty District men's rugby league team held their own against a well-drilled Auckland Vulcans side in Rotorua at the weekend.

The Vulcans under-21 team went up against the Bay senior side at Puketawhero Park on Saturday afternoon, winning 46-28.

Former New Zealand Warriors assistant coach John Ackland coached the under-21 side and said he was impressed with the talent in the Bay.

"Clearly some players have potential down there," he said. "It was a good exercise [for our guys]."

Bay of Plenty District coach Doug Unuwai said they got a lot out of the game.

"We haven't played an Auckland side for many a year," he said.

"They were well drilled and very classy. They had the size and speed, everything you would expect from an Auckland side.

"For our boys we do have the talent there but we need to play these games more frequently. A lot of [the players] really enjoyed it.

"Even though we did not win they enjoyed seeing the class from Auckland and seeing the way they play."

He said it was a good learning curve and experience for our top local players to play different regions, like Auckland.

Unuwai said the match on Saturday was their last game on the representative calender for 2014 and he hoped more games could be included next year, against other top sides, to boost rugby league here.

The Auckland under-21 side got off to a good start on Saturday before the Bay side fought back.

"In the first 10 minutes Auckland gave it to us but when we settled in we got back into the game and started playing simple footy."

Unuwai said his team played some really nice rugby league at the weekend.

The Bay of Plenty District under-18 team also played on Saturday, against the Auckland under-18 team, losing 50-10.

During the last three weeks the Bay men's representative team have played three matches against Waikato, Coastline and the Auckland under-21 side.

They lost a close match to Waikato before beating Coastline in another tight encounter.

Bay of Plenty District Rugby League covers the wider Rotorua, Taupo, Tokoroa, Mangakino and Putaruru area.
