As Rotorua prepares for the Lakeside 2019 Waiata Mai concert on Saturday the message from police is to have fun but to stay safe.

In a statement, Rotorua area commander Inspector Anaru Pewhairangi said a number of police officers would be working at the concert as per standard procedure.

"We hope that everyone enjoys their night, looks after each other and has a great time.

"Enjoy engaging in the spirit of the event.

"This is a great opportunity for us to come together and enjoy each other's company."

Pewhairangi said police were working closely with Lakeside organisers and Rotorua Lakes Council to ensure the event was safe.
