Cold and crisp winter weather made for perfect winter rugby playing conditions on Saturday.

The favourable conditions meant mostly high scoring but closely fought battles making for an enjoyable spectacle from the sidelines in Baywide Premier 1 round four matches.

This most clearly demonstrated by Rotoiti who snatched a thrilling 30-28 victory against Te Puna thanks to a Logan Henry penalty with the very last kick of the game at Emery Park.

Rotoiti were leading 10-8 at halftime after tries from Henry and Beau Kiel.

But Te Puna showed their quality, which has rewarded them with two wins out of three in the newly formatted Premier, in the second half and were leading 28-27 with two minutes to go.

Home support drowned out the final whistle though, with the most relieved look on Henry's face whose wayward kicking had failed to make the mark in previous weeks.

Rotoiti vice-captain Joe Royal was pleased with the performance and praised his kicker's composure.

"Everyone played with a lot of drive and passion - they really wanted the win," he said.

"Logan was super cool at the end. Our captain Zac (Hohneck) did a bit of reverse psychology on him. He told him that he didn't care if he missed it.

"We had a lot of leaders on the pitch today. Everyone was backing each other up and if the pass was on they were just getting it going."

Rotoiti took an early lead when scrum-half Henry bulldozed over from close range after five minutes.

But the away side responded in stylish fashion ten minutes later when out-side centre Pomare Pearson broke through beating three defenders to dive over in the left hand corner.

Te Puna's Keegan Long kicked his side 8-5 in front after 25 minutes with a penalty but with three minutes to go before the break Rotoiti's Kiel finished off a fast paced break in the left corner after impressive forwards' build up play play on the opposition's tryline.

The away side took the lead five minutes after the restart thanks to another impressive Pearson try which Robert Dunne converted, replacing an injured Long in kicking duty.

But six minutes later it was 20-15 to Rotoiti thanks to a Hohneck try followed by a Henry penalty.

In this topsy turvy game Dunne then kicked Te Puna one point in front with two penalties after 65 minutes.

Rotoiti fought back once again through a Bauro Kairaoi try in the right hand corner, converted by Henry taking the scoreline to 27-21 with 10 minutes to go.

With a couple of minutes left on the clock Te Puna thought they had clinched victory when Tana Tuhakaraina crashed over.

But from the restart Rotoiti managed to turn over possession and forced a desperate Te Puna into tackling errors right in front of their own tryline in the final phase of play.

A stifling silence fell over Emery Park as a heavily head bandaged and bruised Henry stood up to take the kick shortly followed by jubilant cheers as the ball sailed through the middle of the posts.

"We came bloody close but if you want to win tight games you've got to be able to do that last minute or two well and finish off," Te Puna captain Dunne said.

"It's the business end of the season and it was a really even game. It just comes down to those little mistakes."

The result sees Rotoiti climb to fifth in the table on 10 points.

Whilst top of the table Mount Maunganui beat Whakatane Marist 23-15 at home, Rangataua clung onto a 22-18 win away at Te Puke Sports.

But Tauranga Sports proved the exception to those close margins with a 46-7 bonus point win away against Greerton Marist.

Meanwhile in Premier 2, Waikite were victorious in the weekend clash billed as the "battle of Rotorua" beating Marist St Michael's 15-6 away thanks to second half tries from blindside flanker Derone Campbell and winger Ethen Draper with a Carlo Putaranui conversion and penalty.

"It was a very close fought contest and the win came from some impact forward players coming on in the second half," said Waikite head coach Carl Marsters.

"We played with urgency and composure which has been lacking in previous weeks. A well deserved win."

Meanwhile top of the table Whakarewarewa had their fourth impressive win in a row, beating Poroporo 47-27 at home.

Whilst Ngonogotaha remain bottom of the table after suffering their fourth defeat in a row, losing 30-5 at home to Paroa.
