Ohope's Lisa Carrington has set a new world record on her way to a gold medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Russia.
Carrington qualified fastest through the heats and semis and broke the world record in the final of her specialist 200m event, with a time of37.898 seconds last night.
She finished a full second ahead of Polish silver medallist Marta Walezykiewicz (38.814secs), marking the third time Carrington has taken the title at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.
Earlier in the day, Carrington had to play catch up after a difficult start in the 500m race. She managed to catch the leader Hungarian Danuta Kozak and stay with her most of the way down the course.
However, Kozak pulled ahead in the last 20m to take the gold medal, leaving Carrington to claim silver, an improvement on the bronze she won in Duisburg.
