Kahukura have clawed their way into the top four of Division 1 and they are desperate to stay there.

On the back of a 27-12 victory over Katikati last weekend, a win over second-placed Papamoa tomorrow would get Kahukura one step closer to the semifinals.

Kahukura coach Wayne Fell said it was important to get the win and head in the right direction on the table.

"That's where we need to be so we're pretty happy.

"It'll be a tough game against Papamoa and we probably need to win that as well.

"I think we played well against them last time and just lost, so hopefully we can play to the same sort of structure as we did last week and squeak out a win," Fell said.

He said his side controlled the ball well against Katikati.

"We never really looked like losing, we had the game under control for most of it.

"When we did have some space free up we moved it around and scored some tries, which was good.

"I don't think [the Kahukura players] have lacked confidence this season, they'll always have a go.

"We just haven't quite got over the try line and have lost a few games by not very many points."

Kahukura would need to bring an accurate kicking game against Papamoa as they had backs who ran the ball well, he said.

"We need to make sure we kick down those tramlines and don't give them too much space.

"We need to be careful where we're kicking it and run at them in attack.

"Hopefully the boys will play to the structures we have in place and see if we can open up some space out wide."
