The mother of murdered teenager Jordan Herewini says his killer's conviction for murder is "fitting".
A High Court jury at Rotorua on Wednesday night returned a guilty verdict for Kawerau gang member Quentin Duane Pukeroa following a four and a half-week trial before Justice Edwin Wylie.
The 33-year-old ran the 16-year-old Murupara
boy down in his back yard on January 27 last year after his truck was stolen by rival gang members earlier in the day.
Pukeroa was also found guilty on other charges including attempted murder, aggravated robbery, injuring with intent and participation in an organised criminal group.
Jordan's mum Natalie Cowley said in a written statement the guilty verdict was the right one.
"The verdict of murder is a fitting one," she said. "I just hope the sentence reflects the brutality of the crime."
The long trial had been an enlightening experience for her.
"Sitting in the courtroom representing my son for the past four weeks has been a surreal experience and an eye-opener," she said.
"Big thanks to the jury for their patience in wading through the mountain of evidence, submissions and multiple points of law. It was a hard task. The Crown presented a solid case and on behalf of Jordan I thank all those involved in the investigation and prosecution."
Investigating officer Detective Sergeant John Wilson of the Rotorua police told The Daily Post it had been a long 21 months since Jordan was killed.
Other violent conflicts have arisen in Murupara since the teenager's death.
Another trial is due to start in July for those accused of murdering teenager Kaine Lewis during an alleged gang confrontation in September last year.
Mr Wilson said he was pleased with last night's convictions.
"It was a good result," he said.
"It's a good start. It's about trying to make right the problem that this has caused, which has had far-reaching implications for the community of Murupara."
