Irene Van Dyk says there is still hope for the Silver Ferns after losing to England by the biggest margin ever.

All the sporting news that happened overnight.

Silver Ferns to face Australia

The good news is the Silver Ferns are still alive in the Commonwealth Games. The bad news is they have to beat Australia to even have a shot at a gold medal. Despite losing their second pool game to England yesterday, New Zealand still advanced to the semifinals after first Uganda and then Malawi failed to secure large enough victories to book semifinals spots. 12 hours after their England defeat, the Silver Ferns found out their opponent for a spot in the gold medal match would be old rivals Australia after the hosts beat Jamaica 72-51 in their final pool game. The semifinal will take place on Saturday, along with the other semifinal between England and Jamaica.

Black Sticks' unbeaten run comes to end

Goals from Australian midfielder Jacob Whetton and forward Trent Mitton proved the difference in their 2-1 pool A victory against New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games.

Cory Bennett drilled a goal from a penalty corner with 90 seconds remaining, but Australia's defence held until the end. Both teams went into the match unbeaten from their three prior games. New Zealand will now play England in tomorrow's semifinal while Australia play India.

Dirk to keep on playing

German basketball star Dirk Nowitzki has vowed to play one more season in the NBA after a storied carrer with the Dallas Mavericks. The 39-year-old, who is recovering from minor surgery on his left ankle, made the annoucement before the last game of the season against the Phoenix Suns. With 31,187 points he is in sixth place on the all-time scorer list and is the only non-American in the top 10.

President sorry for fountain jump

Roma president James Pallotta says he will pay a fine and has apologised to Mayor Virginia Raggi for jumping into a downtown fountain to celebrate the win over Barcelona.

Surrounded by a crowd of flag-waving Roma fans, Pallotta was seen performing a backward somersault in his dress shirt and pants into a fountain in the Piazza del Popolo.

Pallotta was ecstatic after Roma surprised Barcelona with a 3-0 win yesterday to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit in the Champions League quarterfinals.
