Waikato's Shaun Blackbourn and Joy Archer, of the St Andrews Club, have won the North Island Indoor Bowls Championship Pairs at the Rotorua Sportsdrome.

In the final, played over 10 ends on Saturday, they beat the Lake Taupō pair of Mark Hastie and Matthew Farquhar 10-7.

In the semifinals Hastie and Farquhar beat Rodney and Steve Mills from Waikato's Matangi Club 11-3, while Blackbourn and Archer beat Daniel French and former Rotorua player Keri Te Tamaki from Green Island Club, Otago 13-3.

The final saw Hastie and Farquhar make the best start to lead 5-0 after three ends, but on the fourth end Blackbourn removed a Hastie bowl to score five and level the scores. He then scored a single and a two to lead 8-5. Hastie closed the gap to 7-8 after eight ends but then the Waikato pair out bowled the Taupō combination with two singles to win the match 10-7.

One hundred and twenty pairs entered the main competition and 48 qualified for sudden-death post-section play.

They fought back to level the scores 10-all after the regulation 10 ends. On the deciding end they scored the crucial shot after a measure was needed to decide the winner.

The runners-up from Albany, North Harbour were Sharon Peters, Doug Campbell, Gaylene West and Blanche Allport.
