Waiariki Institute of Technology has embraced the diversity of students through its Philippine Independence Day celebrations.

Yesterday started with a flag raising ceremony during which the country's national anthem was sung.

Later in the day food and energetic cultural performances were on offer.

Student organiser Melanie Farenas said she vowed to make this year's celebrations great.

"When I came to New Zealand I was told last year's celebrations for Philippine Independence Day were not very successful and not many people went which made me sad because I am very proud to be Filipino ... am glad this year was a big success with not just the Filipino students getting involved, but all the students on the campus."

Mrs Farenas said the cultural performances were a big hit with students, who were impressed with the traditional dances and songs.

"We love to perform so it wasn't hard to encourage other students to perform on the day."

Proceeds from the event went to the Nepalese earthquake relief effort.

"I'm not sure how much was raised but it is important to help out other countries, especially those who have been devastated by natural disasters.

"We hope the money we did raise will make a difference, however small, because it came from our hearts."
