Live Cook Islands drumming is part of a unique new fitness class being offered in Rotorua.
Hula Ora is a mix of Pacific dance/hula and exercise run at Pacific MMA gym each week.
Manager and head trainer TJ Marsters, who is of Cook Islands and Maori descent, said the class
was designed to promote health and mentor others through cultural music and dance.
"It's a fun, low impact, toning and strengthening exercise class for all skill and fitness levels," he said. "What makes this fitness class unique is its cultural aspect. The classes are set to the sound of local Cook Islands drum group Avarau who play live for each session. Pacific MMA specialises in a wide range of martial arts and fitness - hula is definitely an art form. It is impossible to keep still while the drums are being played. The beats will get you moving and raise your fitness level," Mr Marsters said.
Classes are held every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the gym, 10 Maisey Pl, Fairy Springs. Cost is $5 per person and children over 5 are welcome to join in with an adult.
