Rotorua man John Woods celebrated turning 103 yesterday.

Mr Woods has been in Rotorua Hospital's Older Persons Rehabilitation Services Unit for the past week and a half after a fall, and is expected to be in hospital for another few weeks.

His son-in-law, Andrew Kusabs, told the crowd of family, friends, and hospital staff that it was lovely to see so many people there for the birthday celebration.

He said his father-in-law, a veteran of both the El Alamein (1942) and Monte Cassino (1944) battles in World War II, has been very well cared for in hospital.

Mr Woods first moved to Rotorua in the 1950s. His three daughters, their husbands and extended family members were there for the celebration, along with his younger sister Dulcie, who turned 87 the day before.

OPRS CNM Karin Norman said it was lovely for OPRS staff to be able to host the birthday celebration.
