Police have today opened a homicide investigation following the death of a 41-year-old woman in Mangakino, north west of Taupo.

Police were alerted about 7.30am to the incident, with detectives from Taupo CIB leading the investigation.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault and is currently in custody.

A scene examination at a property in Mangakino is ongoing.

Police said the incident appeared to be isolated and there was no wider risk to the community.
