A Rotorua architectural designer has almost completed a clean sweep at a regional awards by taking home five of the six on offer.

Darryl Church's design for the new Waiariki Institute of Technology health and science building, and a "compact" new build at Lake Tarawera, won the spoils at Saturday's ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Brendon Gordon of Brendon Gordon Architecture won the remaining award for a new home built at Mt Maunganui.

These awards are held every year to celebrate the most innovative, creative and aesthetic architectural designs in the country.

They are presented to architectural designers in both residential and commercial sectors and identify stand-out designs categorised as new homes, interiors, alterations and additions and industrial design.

As well as the six regional awards, two highly commended awards were given to Matt Hodson of Insight Architecture and a commended awarded to Richard Hale of Insight Architecture.

Architectural Designers New Zealand chief executive Astrid Andersen said the two winning Bay of Plenty designers were leaders in the field and real assets to the Bay of Plenty design industry.

"Each year the ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards grow larger and take an even greater lead in innovative design," she said.

"In fact, this year we have had more than 126 top-quality entries from across New Zealand. As always the Bay of Plenty brings a special aesthetic to the awards due to the relaxed lifestyle and beautiful surrounds.

"The two winning designers dominated their region and this is a real testament to their skill and individual style."

The winners of regional awards currently being given across the country are now eligible for national titles, which include the Supreme Design Award. The national awards will be announced on October 30.
