'Help him, help him': Witness tells of horrifying moment motorbike slid under truck

NZ Police release a message on safe driving this Easter. / NZ Police

A person has died in a crash involving a truck and a motorcycle in Rotorua.

The incident, at the intersection of Edmund and Clayton Rds, took the Easter road toll to three on Saturday. It rose to four on Sunday.

Police were notified of the crash about 11.20am on Saturday.

One person has died at the scene and the serious crash unit is in attendance.

Diversions were in place.

Aaron Clair was driving behind the truck when the crash happened.

He said he saw the motorbike approach the intersection of Edmund and Clayton Rds and lose control, sliding under the truck's back wheels.

Clair said witnessing the crash was "horrific".

"I hopped out of my car and called 111 and started slowing down traffic. People came running out of the homes to try help the young man on the bike, giving him chest compressions," Clair said.

"There were a lot of people yelling to 'help him, help him,' but there wasn't much that could be done."

Clair said emergency services showed up within minutes.

"I feel sorry for the truck driver. There was nothing he could have done to avoid it. I hope in his head he's all right."

Rotorua Fire Station officer Barry Hogan said: "When we arrived with the ambulance they determined the person was critically injured."

Hogan wasn't aware the person had since died.

A man was seen praying at the scene roughly 40 minutes after the incident.

The accident followed three major crashes in the North Island on Friday.

A child was killed after a crash on the Desert Rd in Waikato about 3.30pm Friday.

One person injured in the crash remains in Waikato Hospital's high dependency unit.

Another child who was taken to Auckland's Starship hospital after the Desert Rd crash died on Sunday.

One person also died after a Good Friday crash in the Bay of Plenty north of Taupo between Pokuru Rd and Tirohanga Rd at 10.52am.
