A severe weather watch is in place for the region this weekend.
MetService said periods of heavy rain could fall in Rotorua, Taupō, and the Eastern Bay of Plenty and could reach warning amounts.
The watch is in place for Rotorua and Taupō from 10pm Saturday to 12pm Sunday andin the Eastern Bay of Plenty from 1am Saturday until 6am Monday.
A low over the Tasman Sea is expected to move southeast over the lower South Island today as well as an associated front onto the North Island which will become slow moving over central areas tomorrow.
