Periods of heavy rain is forecast for the region today.

MetService said a complex trough is moving eastwards across New Zealand today, with bands of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms expected.

In the 12 hours from 9am to 9pm 80 to 100mm of rain could fall in the ranges of the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

People are advised that this amount of rain could cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly with surface flooding and slips possible.
