There's more to taking a kid fishing than to just give them a rod. The Blue Light Rotorua Take A Kid Fishing Day involved hundreds of hours by volunteers preparing for the event and then getting 80 children on to the waters of Lake Rotorua.
It's one event put onby the community ogranisation that gets them involved with Rotorua's youth. The fishing day recently featured on the TV show Gone Fishin' and the memories will linger on for those 8-13 year-olds who took part.
"A lot of effort goes into the kids fishing, it's a big challenge," said Blue Light Rotorua chairman and Rotorua police Senior Constable Viv Sutton.
Bluelight Rotorua is a community policing initiative aimed at encouraging better relations between young people and their parents, police and the community. The idea is to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour by exposing young people to different experiences in a safe and supervised environment. It is also to raise self-esteem among young people.
The Rotorua branch is made up of mostly community members as well as a handful of police officers. They will be holding an open evening on November 19 for people to find out what they do and hopefully give some of their time. The event will be at the Owners and Trainers' lounge at the Arawa Park racecourse from 5.30pm.
