A 31-year-old Gisborne woman was in critical condition in Waikato Hospital last night after a two-car crash at Rotoma yesterday.

A Waikato Hospital board spokeswoman said the woman remained in a critical condition in hospital's intensive care unit.

The crash happened on State Highway 30 near Braemar Rd just after 2pm and the critically injured patient was taken to Waikato Hospital by the Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter.

A spokesperson from the rescue helicopter service said the woman was a front seat passenger in one of the two cars.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman earlier said two people were trapped as result of the collision.

Four other people, who had moderate injuries, were taken by ambulance to Whakatāne Hospital and three others had minor injuries.

The road has since been reopened after the police completed a scene examination.

"Police thank motorists for their patience and co-operation while the road was closed."

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Serious Crash Unit and police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash but has not yet been spoken to.

Anyone with information should call the Whakatāne police station on 07 308 5255.
