Richmond Ave in Taupo is closed and people should avoid the area. Photo/File

A gas leak has closed a Taupō street and people are being advised to avoid the area.

Richmond Ave, near Ingle Ave, is closed as the fire service and contractors deal with the leak.

Police are helping at cordons.

Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Murray Bannister said the fire service was helping the gas authority fix the leak which he described as a 'gas main rupture'.

More to come.
