Avis Spencer may not have green fingers but she is the stalwart of the Westbrook Garden Circle.

The Rotorua woman is not an avid gardener but loves being part of the club which was started in 1996.

Mrs Spencer said the club was started by a group of women who lived in Westbrook and had a common interest in gardening.

Since then, the club has grown to 63 members who live across Rotorua.

Mrs Spencer said she was currently the acting president of the club. She was previously president for a number of years, and has again stepped in to the acting president role as the current president is sick.

"We are a community-minded social group and everyone has a common interest in gardening," Mrs Spencer said.

"Being part of the group is a great way for people to come together and talk about all things to do with gardening."

She said the group, which met once a month, had a lot of guest speakers, who talk about a range of topics.

"We have had all sorts of people come and talk to us."

She said a lot of the members of the garden circle enjoyed the friendship and advice which they got from being part of the group.

"A lot of these people are very, very good gardeners."

Mrs Spencer said the garden circle wasn't just a club for people who had a lot of garden space.

"A lot of the members live in small flats and don't have a lot of space at all. They just enjoy learning about what they can do with the space they have and what kinds of things they can grow."

The group also goes on lots of outings together.

"The social aspect of the group is great," Mrs Spencer said. "We go on all sorts of trips and outings together."

The group is open to have new members and Mrs Spencer said men and women of all ages were welcome to join.

"You don't need to know about gardening," she said. "You just need to want to learn. It is a great place to meet like-minded people who enjoy getting together and talking about gardening while we have afternoon tea."

Anyone interested in joining can go along to one of the group's meetings, which are held at the club rooms at Arawa Bowling Club on the first Monday of the month.
