If you ask Rotorua youth what Gangnam Style is you can guarantee they'll know what you're talking about.

The Daily Post went out on the streets yesterday to find out how popular the massive pop hit Gangnam Style and its dance craze is in Rotorua. South Korean star PSY's Gangnam Style music video has had more than 340 million views on YouTube and reached No 1 on the official New Zealand singles chart, despite it being in Korean.

It seems you don't need to understand what the song is about to enjoy PSY's galloping horse dance. The music video shows PSY carrying out horse-riding/galloping movements with his legs while his arms are in a holding-the-reins-type movement and a lasso movement.

It's a dance that has proved popular among Rotorua youth.

Maia Carrington, 13, and Dallis Jack, 13, told The Daily Post the song and dance were popular at their schools with students copying it most days for the past few weeks.

"Everybody has it on their phones," Maia said.

Maia, who is a student at John Paul College, said students copied the dance and played it constantly and it was the same for Dallis at Rotorua Intermediate.

"It's pretty cool, I think they should do an English version so we know what they're talking about. Everybody at school dances to it," Maia said.

Maia was told about the song by her friend while Dallis came across it on the social networking site Facebook before sharing it with her friends.

They said other dance craze videos they've copied included shuffling on LMFAO's Party Rocker and the I'm Sexy and I Know It dance, again by LMFAO.

When The Daily Post asked people to demonstrate their versions of the dance craze in the CBD, at least eight people showed us their Gangnam Style rendition with some agreeing to be filmed for our website.

Two Rotorua teens - Jason Lines, 19, and Johnny Gilles, 19, - had never tried to copy the dance until giving it a go for The Daily Post yesterday afternoon.

Manuriki Johnson, 13, and Michael Bennet, 14, said they had learned the dance at a youth group but only Michael had done it since, at a birthday party.
