Police are appealing for people to come forward who heard or saw a man fall from a Whakatane hotel balcony onto a footpath at the weekend.

A man is in a critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital after falling from the first-floor balcony of the Whakatane Hotel, above the Craic Irish pub, on The Strand around 3.30am on Saturday.

Whakatane police were now investigating the circumstances surrounding how he came to fall and sustain his injuries.

They hoped a further appeal would give more eyewitness accounts to the early morning incident.

"We are very grateful to the local community who have provided valuable information which has allowed us to progress this investigation in a positive manner," said Eastern Bay of Plenty Police detective sergeant Darren Thomas.

Police asked anyone who had heard or seen anything in connection to the fall to contact Whakatane Police on (07) 308 5255 or anonymously on 0800 555 111.
