One hundred years of memories will be celebrated at Thornton Primary School this weekend.
More than 100 past and present students will attend the centenary celebrations.
During its history, the school has been plagued by fire and flooding and has been relocated to where it now stands on Eastbank Rd.
Family friendly activities will take place during the day on Saturday and Sunday, with former students welcome to tour the grounds and see the changes since their school days. As well, the older generations can let their hair down and meet former classmates in the evening.
Centenary team member Laura Morris said people were welcome to register for the reunion until late tomorrow or early Saturday.
"If it looks like it is going to be a nice weekend with the weather, it might encourage people to come along and catch up with old classmates," Ms Morris said.
The centenary would not be a "super formal" occasion, but there would be a more formal dinner with a band on Saturday night at Adventure SolutioNZ, which was included in the price of registration.
On sale would be a booklet covering the area's history and the school's 100-year lifespan.
Letters of congratulation had been received from Prime Minster John Key, Minister of Education Hekia Parata and Whakatane Mayor Tony Bonne, and Ms Morris said it was exciting that such people had taken the time to congratulate such a small school.
"I can't wait to be there and get among it all," she said.
Registrations will open tomorrow night and continue Saturday morning with morning tea. Registration costs $20 per person. Commemorative photos and lunch will be followed by the dinner on Saturday. The reunion will conclude with a Sunday service.
Forms are available online via the Thornton School 100 Years Facebook page.
