Fire crews have this afternoon been called to a scrub fire near Te Ngae Rd.

A Fire Communications Centre spokesman said a call came in from the public about 3.30pm.

A reporter at the scene said the fire appeared to be in the same place as the big fire at Sulphur Point last month.

"There is a decent amount of smoke that can be seen from Te Ngae Rd, but can't see flames at the moment," the reporter said.

She described the smoke as thick, dense, white smoke.
