Film reflection on destructive Mount Tarawera eruption

People can reflect on the eruption which resulted in the loss of many lives with a thrilling film.

On June 10, 1886 Mount Tarawera erupted with the loss of more than 120 lives.

People can reflect on the anniversary of this eruption by watching the Rotorua Stories movie that was previously shown at Rotorua Museum.

On Saturdaythe 20-minute film will be played three times in the Discovery Space on the second floor of Rotorua Library Te Aka Mauri.

The sessions will be at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

Well-known as the 'shaky seat' cinema in the Rotorua Museum, this film has not been seen publicly since the museum closed for earthquake strengthening in November 2016.

The Rotorua Stories movie will take you on a thrilling adventure, plummeting 13km into the belly of the earth to discover the scientific and mythological answers to Rotorua's volatile landscape.

Through the movie you can visit the world famous Pink and White Terraces, encounter great Te Arawa tūpuna (ancestors), and experience a portrayal of the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera.

Tori Williams, Rotorua Museum events and engagement co-ordinator says with Rotorua Library now open in the new Te Aka Mauri building it provides a fantastic venue for people to come and see the movie to commemorate the anniversary of the Mount Tarawera eruption.

"So many people know this movie and have missed the iconic shaky-seat cinema from Rotorua Museum."

She says the eruption of Tarawera and resulting destruction of the Pink and White Terraces forever altered the geographical and cultural landscape of the Rotorua district.

"Rotorua Stories explains this tragedy from using Māori legends and scientific fact for audiences of all ages.

"Understanding the history that shaped our district helps us move forward. It is also a great way to share stories with new generations."

The eruption of Mt Tarawera remains one of the worst recorded natural disasters in New Zealand history.

The Pink and White Terraces, a major tourist attraction once described as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World', were destroyed along with the livelihoods of nearby tribes which relied on the visitor trade.

All the sessions are free of charge and no bookings are required, but seats are limited.
