UPDATE: A farmer has been discharged from hospital after he was attacked by a cow in Opotiki.

The farmer suffered serious injuries in the attack that happened in Opotiki yesterday.

A Whakatane Hospital spokeswoman said the man was discharged from hospital this morning.

Earlier: A farmer suffered serious injuries after he was attacked by a cow in Opotiki.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was dispatched to Opotiki about 12.30am yesterday where a 50-year-old local man had been attacked by a cow.

A rescue helicopter spokesman said the farmer and his wife were working in the yards with a mob of cows when one attacked the man three times. The man suffered serious chest injuries.

St John ambulance staff picked up the man from his property and drove him to the Opotiki airfield to meet the rescue helicopter.

He was flown to Whakatane Hospital in a moderate condition.
