A "uniquely Kiwi" circus will set up its big top in Rotorua next month.

The Raglan-based Circus Aotearoa will be in town for seven shows as part of the circus' seventh national tour. This will be the third visit to Rotorua for the circus - it was last in town two years ago.

Circus Aotearoa is a modern operation that provides wholesome, animal-free entertainment in a family and friendly environment showcasing its Kiwi performers with their blend of traditional and modern human-based circus.

Ringmaster Damian Gordon said they tried for a show with broad appeal.

"We believe the circus should be about fun, as well as being awe inspiring for the whole family," he said.

As the directors of Circus Aotearoa, Damian Gordon, Patrick Gordon and Irene Goed seek to provide a "genuine circus" for young and talented Kiwi performers to expand their skills, establish circus careers, and continue the New Zealand touring circus tradition.

Circus advance man Patrick Gordon said, as part of that tradition, the circus would be keeping halftime concessions simple and affordable.

"[Snacks] consist of fresh popcorn and hand-rolled candy floss, alongside drinks and lolly bags.

"Even more appealing to parents is, in an effort to keep the costs of the show affordable for all Kiwi families, there is no merchandising, souvenirs sold, [or]a fried food caravan to tax the wallet. To us it's all about the show and getting a new generation in front of live performers."

The first show is at 7.30pm on February 5 followed by two shows a day over Waitangi Day weekend, February 6 to February 8.

Tickets start at $15 for children and $20 for adults with youngsters three and under free. Whanau and group discounts are available on request at the ticket office. The team recommends buying early or booking on line at www.circusaotearoa.co.nz
