There will be a full race grid at this weekend's Kaharoa School Trolley Derby as families set out to win the Mike Donnelly Memorial Trophy.

This is the third year the derby has been held and 50 modified carts will be racing around the paddock throughout Sunday.

There's plenty on offer for spectators. On top of the racing there will be paintball, pony rides and a bouncy castle.

Rachael McGarvie, who is on the PTA and derby organising committee, said there would be a wide range of refreshments too.

"We'll have venison burgers, a sausage sizzle and lots of home-baked goodies," she said.

"Everything is coming into place for it to be a great day. There will be activities and entertainment for everyone."

The McGarvie family is putting the finishing touches to a trolley they bought especially for the event.

"My whole family is going to be involved," she said.

"Our cart is cool, like a hot rod. It's a bit heavy so we have to do some final modifications. We really enjoy the derby atmosphere. Everyone is there for a good time. The races are cool to watch but even off the race track there are happy faces everywhere. It's like an old-fashioned fair."

All money raised from the event is going to the Kaharoa School PTA, which wants to fund teacher aides at the school.

There are three age categories for drivers aged between 5 and 10, 11 and 17 and over 18.

The races will be on Kaharoa Rd, which will be closed from 7.30am to 3pm.
