The biggest wasp nest Rotorua pest-controller has seen in his 30-year career.

Exterminators hope to today cut open and remove the monster wasp nest found bordering a Hamurana lifestyle block this week.

Bay Pest Services owner-operator Chris Brunel said the stubborn nest, about 2m wide and 2m tall was the biggest he had seen in his 30-years in the industry.

He said "all hell broke loose" after the team heavily re-dosed the nest with poison on Tuesday, smashed a chamber to expose the larvae and leaving it for a day yesterday to calm down and hopefully kill off all the wasps.

Brunel said his foot was swollen today after an aggravated wasp flew through a gap in his taped-down protective gear, stinging him.

The crew used the day away yesterday to see to a queue of spider and cockroach jobs.

The nest was found in Hamurana. The World Record for the largest wasp nest was about 5.5m in circumference on a farm in West Auckland in 1963.

Brunel said he would ideally like to finish the job today but could not be sure as they originally thought it would only be a two-day job.
