A partnership between Rotorua District Council and Canmap Hawley Ltd has resulted in a win for the local surveying company's "The Manky" fabric map creation.
The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors awarded Canmap Hawley the 2012 NZIS Award of Excellence (Silver Level) for the Redwoods-Whakarewarewa Forest Recreation Maps project in Invercargill at the weekend.
The award was presented at the institute's annual conference dinner and awards ceremony.
The Manky, a combination of the words "map" and "hanky", is a popular navigational tool for Whakarewarewa Forest and Redwoods enthusiasts. Made of micro-fibre the forest map is durable, legible when wet, can be washed and dried, is absorbent, anti-bacterial, eco-friendly and re-usable.
Council Redwoods Forest & Visitor Centre manager Julianne Wilkinson said Canmap Hawley had been involved in the development of a number of resources that contributed to the safety and enjoyment of recreational users of the Redwoods.
