Rotorua's massive new indoor entertainment facility Motion Entertainment will open in just over two weeks.

Stage one of the major new development on Te Ngae Rd is nearing competition with Motion Entertainment set to open on November 26.

The development can host eight activities - including a new indoor trampoline park, a bistro, indoor playland and laser tag - and is believed to be the largest facility of its kind in New Zealand.

The 6290sq m complex is expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors each year.

It is the first stage of the development which also includes a new BP service station, which opens next week.

Holmes Group managing director Ryan Holmes said it was "really crazy" as contractors finished up- with about 75 contractors on site.

He said contractors should be finished by the end of the week with the final fitouts taking place inside before opening day.

"It is going to be excellent. A lot of people are anticipating it. Looking at the fitout there is some amazing technology."

Mr Holmes said the project had been a long time coming. His company started the consent process in 2011 and got consent for the development in 2012.

He said stage two Lynmore Junction construction had already started and completion of that was expected some time between April and June next year. There was still space available for lease.

As part of the development, traffic lights have been installed at the Iles Rd and Te Ngae Rd intersection. It was part of the original resource consent for the development.

The work on the traffic lights began in August and is expected to be finished by November 16.

Destination Rotorua's Tom Worsp said the opening of Motion Entertainment was a great addition to the city's visitor industry.

"It not only gives another family option but creates a destination within a destination and is also a great wet-weather option.

"A development on this scale choosing to open in Rotorua is a real testament to the hard work that has gone on within the visitor industry and growth in residents, the future is looking bright."

Rotorua mum Rebecca Daniels said her son Harrison was already planning his 10th birthday celebrations at the centre in March.

"We have taken him and his friends out of town several times for different activities that the kids really want to do - next year we get to stay in Rotorua and play some laser tag!"

She said while Rotorua had lots to offer, especially outdoors, on rainy days options were a bit limited.
