You probably don't want to be reminded that Christmas is already just around the corner.

Just 45 days from now we'll be unwrapping those much-awaited presents and sitting down to a hearty meal. Well, many of us will be. For some a hearty meal would be a major treat.

Christmas is a time for giving and a time of tradition, and it's a strong tradition at The Daily Post that we hold an annual Christmas appeal to help out a local group or organisation in need.

Over the years we've supported a variety of community groups including local branches of the Child Cancer Foundation, Hospice, the Life Education Trust, Riding for the Disabled and the SPCA.

Last year we conducted two appeals for the Salvation Army Foodbank, including our Christmas appeal which raised more than $40,000 in food and money.

Captain Brian Martin of the Salvation Army told us that without the proceeds from that appeal it would have been difficult for them to give out the amount of food they have this year.

Thank you all for your suggestions. So many worthy causes were put forward to be this year's recipient, and it would be great to be able to support them all, but this year we have decided to once again get behind the Salvation Army foodbank.

The food is running out.

They help so many needy and hungry families - and with our help, and your help, they can do so much more.

Donations to The Daily Post Christmas Appeal for the Salvation Army foodbank can be made at our office in Hinemoa St between 8am and 5pm weekdays. People can donate money or non-perishable food. Food donations can also be made at the Salvation Army's Community Ministries at Community House on Haupapa St. Challenge your workmates or teammates to see who can bring in the most food items. If your school, church, business, organisation or you as an individual are organising a can drive or fundraising event, let us know by contacting reporter Abigail Hartevelt, ph (07) 348 6199 ext 57049 or email abbey.hartevelt@dailypost.co.nz
