I had a trip down memory lane the other day when I read a Facebook post by a friend who had just gone and bought DoodleArt posters and spent the afternoon with her son and daughter colouring them in.

I have extremely fond memories of getting those posters, which were about A3 in size, as presents. They were rolled up in a tube and gifted with felts. I'd spend hours colouring them in.

My friend's Facebook post really made me smile. I thought about what special memories she was creating for her children. Those will be the memories her children will remember as adults - sitting together for an afternoon colouring in.

I remember seeing another friend's post of her baking and decorating cupcakes with her kids - what a fun time they would have had.

I don't think children will necessarily remember having lots of money spent on them by being taken to the movies or other activities.

Although I must admit I do remember being taken to the movies as an 11 or 12-year-old. It was a family trip to see Chariots of Fire. I remember being very bored but that movie ironically has gone on to be a favourite.

My friend's post got me thinking there's quite a lot parents can do with their children which doesn't require lots of money these school holidays - colouring in, baking, various crafts projects, a picnic or a walk in the Redwoods.

So why not take a break from the computer, TV, Xbox, Playstation and spend a day with your children doing some of the simple activities. I bet they will thank you for it in the future.
