Social networking sites were clogging up with people's experiences of watching the eclipse, trying to get a photo of the eclipse and not realising until after-the-fact that the eclipse was happening. Photos were uploaded to websites too - you only have to see today's paper to see how great the eclipse looked thanks to the awesome photo our photographer Ben Fraser took.
In Hinemoa St where The Daily Post office is, staff from different businesses in the street left their workplaces for a few minutes to take a look.
Despite common sense telling people not to look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection, most of those outside were doing just that, with some trying to block the brightness with their hands.
The excitement in our office could also be felt.
Staff from most departments headed to the highest point of the building to witness the eclipse (all came back inside with blurry eyesight), take video and photos.
Many of them were excited about seeing the sun being blocked out and witnessing a small crescent. Admittedly, it did look pretty cool.
And then there was me. Sitting at my desk having to be encouraged to check it out.
I did enjoy the view and thought Ben's photo was awesome but, I could have lived without it.
It's not like there won't be another one like this along in 18 years.
And with summer coming, haven't we had enough of the sun being hidden?
But seriously, events like this that people all over the country can experience at once are kind of cool, in a great, big, community of 4 million kind of way.
