Editorial: Looking good for cameras

At long last the scum who have been defacing one of the prettiest spots in Rotorua for years are getting the message.

Security cameras are now up on Mountain Rd to deter lazy residents who either can't be bothered putting a free council rubbish bag out on the kerb once a week or paying the fee to go to the city's landfill.

Three security cameras are up at two sites and since they were installed about a month ago, no more rubbish has been dumped.

Perfect result.

No more will Castlecorp staff have to dangerously abseil down the cliff face to collect kitchen sinks, dead animals and couches.

It seems those who were committing this crime knew very well what they were doing was wrong - so much so the fear of being caught on camera and facing a maximum of $7000 fine or one month's jail was enough to stop them in their tracks.

We can only hope they are now doing the right thing rather than finding another spot to leave their mess.

Illegally dumping rubbish is a problem in plenty of towns and cities, not just Rotorua. Yes, we all know dumping rubbish is bad and there has been arguments in the past that cheaper landfill fees would help curb the problem. But these people are lazy by nature. It's not money that's putting them off going to the landfill, although the fees could be a little cheaper to reward those who do make the effort.
