Many of these people won't know just how many others they have touched over their lives.
Special mention has to go to Louise Nicholas, who through no fault of her own has found herself in the position she does today. I'm sure she would give up all the accolades in the world if she could go back in time and change the past.
But she soldiered on and brought national and international attention to something we'd all rather not see or have happen in our society - sexual abuse.
But happen it does, and Louise has indeed become "a voice for survivors" who don't have to suffer alone.
She's had a big year being named the Governor-General's Anzac of the Year, and just last week was named patron of the New Zealand Police College's 290 Wing.
Well done Louise and congratulations to all of the region's awardees. It's because of people like you our community is a better place to live, despite hardships some have to endure.
