It always makes me laugh when the "fat police" start crowing about fast food outlets opening.

A few have come out in social media since we published a story this week about Carl's Jr opening in Rotorua.

Carl's Jr has now applied for resource consent to build a restaurant on Rotorua's Amohau St next to McDonald's and building could begin by the middle of next month.

The restaurant is set to have 80 seats with 26 car parks.

Vehicles will be able to enter from and exit on to Amohau St and at the rear of the site adjacent to the carpark for Kurious Kiwi and Burger King.

Carl's Jr is an American fast food restaurant chain. Its first restaurant in New Zealand opened in 2011. There are now seven restaurants in Auckland with one opening recently on Queen St.

In Rotorua, it will replace the former The Mill liquor store, which has been demolished.

I think this development is great news for Rotorua.

Here's a successful international chain store wanting to open in Rotorua's (dare I say it) tired-looking CBD, creating up to 70 new jobs and still some people are finding negatives.

The problem is Carl's Jr food is pretty high in calories, so excessive consumption isn't good for your health.

Well, if that's the case - simple, don't eat too much.

If you're really against such an outlet coming to Rotorua, don't go there at all.

In the meantime, I'm hoping most of us look forward to the new venture while also enjoying a slight dent in our unemployment figures.
