Editorial: Every bit helps the hungry

The same day we celebrate the generosity of locals who gave to our Christmas Appeal can drive last night, we reveal a small insight into the horrifying extent of poverty in our community.

A new report says one in four children is growing up in poverty, and, among Maori, one in three is struggling.

Those who work with the needy say they've been run off their feet.

They're seeing families who can't make ends meet, increasing debt, sick and hungry children, and there's been a run on beds, blankets and linen.

St Vincent de Paul workers say they are feeding up to 100 hungry children a night.

And this is happening right under our noses.

While many of us know where our next meal is coming from, it's clear many around us do not.

So a huge thank you to those who generously gave when collectors knocked on the door last night, and to all those who have already given to our Christmas Appeal for the Salvation Army food bank.

Every little bit helps.

And while you may have had no idea so many were struggling, you still knew you were helping someone less fortunate with your donation.

Your generosity will help families through Christmas and well into the New Year.
