It's frightening to think there are people doing the likes of driving trucks, operating machinery in mills and working in logging crews in our forests while under the influence of drugs.
Sadly, there will always be drugs and people who use them, including people who think nothing of getting highon cannabis or methamphetamine and then going to work. The danger these people pose to themselves and others must be huge although no doubt they would beg to differ.
Perhaps it's time to introduce legislation specifically relating to the use of drugs while at work, making it compulsory for employers to report to the police anyone who fails a drug test and have them charged.
Drug use is a huge problem in some industries. One imagines that even one person under the influence of drugs poses a real danger in a forestry crew. One on P might be even more of a risk, given the unpredictable behaviour of many users of this disgusting drug.
Drug use must also place a huge financial burden on some industries. They have to fork out for regular drug testing to ensure the safety of their crews and anyone else they might come into contact with during the course of their jobs.
At the moment, it seems it's pretty much up to employers what action they take when a worker fails a drug test. Perhaps the threat of going straight to court and facing a criminal charge and whatever penalty that might bring, would impact on at least some drug users who think it's okay to be high at work.
