The scene of the helicopter crash. Photo/File

It was sad to hear the news this week the BayTrust rescue helicopter had crash landed, causing extensive damage.

In our role in bringing the community the news, we have a close association with the rescue helicopter and the good work they do, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Coming to a sticky end meant the rescue helicopter suddenly became the centre of the news.

The helicopter landed heavily while approaching Taupo Hospital on Saturday, with witnesses saying it appeared the chopper clipped trees while approaching the Taupo Hospital helipad.

Thankfully the pilot, Art Kowalski, and his unnamed crewman were not seriously hurt, although they are both no doubt shaken and are yet to return to duties.

For more than 20 years the rescue helicopter has helped those in need, including lost hunters, critically ill hospital patients and injured crash victims.

The number of lives that have been saved since the chopper started in 1992 are countless and we would be lost without its service.

The rescue helicopter service is currently being covered by neighbouring areas and a replacement machine has now arrived in Rotorua.

It is not known when Mr Kowalski will return to flying but we wish him a speedy recovery.
