Save Aidin Ralfe is the dux of Taupo-nui-a-Tia College.
He was recognised as the top scholar mainly based on excellent results in his academic studies.
His school said it was a difficult decision this year with tight competition from many outstanding students in Year 13.
Described as an outstanding student and
excellent scholar with intellectual curiosity, Aidin achieved the top placing in drama, history and English.
He will be attending Victoria University.
