Drugs stolen from Rotorua dental clinic

A large number of ampules of lignocaine, an anaesthetic drug, as well as adrenaline have been stolen from a Rotorua dental clinic.

Lakes DHB Emergency Department clinical director Dr Peter Freeman said lignocaine had mostly anaesthetic properties and adrenaline was used to prolong the effect of the anaesthetic and constrict blood vessels to reduce blood loss.

"Potentially if more than two of the ampules were injected intravenously the lignocaine and added adrenaline could have a bad cardiac effect," Dr Freeman said.

Police have been advised and emergency departments are aware of the theft.

Anyone who has these ampules or knows someone who does is advised to destroy them.
