About 4am yesterday a 19-year-old Tokoroa man was flown to Waikato Hospital with serious head injuries after his car hit a power pole on State Highway 1 at Lichfield.
Fire and ambulance staff had to secure the downed wires before freeing the driver from his car.
A police spokeswoman said it was unclear what caused the crash but the serious crash unit was investigating.

"If something occurs in front of you make sure you have enough time to stop.
"Look out for ice and keep the speed down.
"Restraint is really important. Keep seatbelts done up because they do save lives."
